Shamanism is not a religion, it's a method. When this method is practiced with reverence, humility and self discipline, the shaman's path can become a way of life. ~ Hank Wesselman
The word Shaman is an anthropological term derived from the word saman of the Manchu Tungas speaking tribes from Siberia. It means, “one who knows or spirit healer.”
Shamanism is a nature based spiritual way of life that goes back to the beginning of human history. It has been practiced all over the world and is still prevalent today. This way of life includes practices where the Shaman (community healer) interacts with nature and spirit to bring about healing; they serve as a bridge between this world and others. Respect and love for the earth, self, others and the spirit realm is inherent in Shamanism.
Moving into altered states of consciousness for information, guidance and to support healing is always a practice of the Shaman. This is true whether they are located in the Western world, a tribal community or any other part of the world. This process is most often done with auditory driving such as drumming and sometimes with plant medicines.
A shaman may use several other alternative healing modalities as well. These modalities have all become much more prevalent in Western culture in recent years. A "modern day" shaman (or one in our melting pot of a culture) might include modalities such as energy healing (Ex. Reiki, Healing Touch, “laying on of hands”), breathwork, sound healing, journey meditations and much more. The modalities employed by a Shaman or spiritual healer are based on a variety of factors including culture, training, background and experience. Shamans are intuitive and often channel information from (and learn from) spiritual guides.
Until my mid twenties, I certainly hadn’t heard of Shamanism and didn’t know what a Shaman was. However, my path led me to it. I had incredible experiences and encountered wonderful mentors and teachers which all led to this way and this work. I am very grateful. It seems that it is not something you choose but rather, something that finds you.
I believe human beings are meaning makers. What I have learned on this journey has provided me with meaning and a deeper connection with life. I am honored to share it with others.
I offer individual healing sessions as well as a 9 month healers training program that begins each September and is rooted in the energy of Shamanism.
Feel free to reach out, I would love to hear from you.
